And on the flip side, I often wonder how my enthusiasm and interest in B7 would have worked out if I DIDN'T know crucial details ahead of time like... - Blake's departure after Season 2 - The general outcome of the last episode I first discovered B7 through a book (The Best and Worst of TV Science Fiction, or something like that) and it didn't have spoiler warnings. There were still plenty enough surprises, though, like Travis' end and the destruction of the Liberator. So while I was grateful to learn about the show, I really wish I could have been surprised more often. (And speaking of how long the list has been around...I've been off the list for four years. I wonder if anybody's missed me?) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! But only the single 'spacey ray gun' sounding shot in the middle sounded vastly different to me. But who [or what] fired that first shot? And whose weapon lobbed that odd ray gun blast? Jenna Stannis? The Vorlons? The Shadows? The System? Han Solo? aha! The Vorgons have been fingered on this lyst. Oddly enuf, I can clearly see Avon stalking the decks of the Liberator, pontificating Vorgon poetry - to further torment Blake, but especially to show everyone his superior level of erudition. And the chance >of personal injury to her was slight, given that Avon was surrounded by >armed Fed personnel; even if he did fire, could he have hit her? I doubt it. In "Assasin", Servalan spoke to Cancer / Avon over the intercom, saying: It's a pity that I can't see you Avon, but at least I can hear you [die] a horrible death [after suffering beautifully] (Instead we saw Cancer suffer beautifully. And she certainly deserved it, after Peri made us all suffer so beautifully!) Servalan went out of her way to gloat over Jenna's predicament in "Keeper." (A lifetime with [that barbarian] should be very instructive.) She tormented Hal Mellanby needlessly. In "Powerplay" she tormented Cally on the hospital ship. Then she made a special visit to gloat over Vila and Cally when they were strapped down for vivisection. In "Pressure Point" she tormented Kasabi and gloated over the student besting the teacher. She gloated over Egrorian's fate: losing her. All these (and more!) were glorious gloat moments. Surely Servalan is the *supreme* Evil Overlord. She has obviously not read the Evil Overlord Handbook: rule # 1: I shall not gloat over my captive hero, lest his friends have time to save him. Hence, I cannot *imagine* Sleer missing out on this chance to gloat over Avon. I think she waited for the shooting to end before stepping into that room. What she didn't count on was the awe in which the Federation Troopers held Avon. They wanted to stare at this legend for a bit before felling him. Hence Sleer stepped into the breech. But what I'd like to think is that Sleer ordered the Troopers to kill everyone *except* Avon. Because, as Erica said, Sleer wanted Avon to die knowing it was she who engineered his humiliating downfall. Despite their lustfull attraction, both these warriors knew their cat and mouse game was a deadly contest. And that when it came to winners, *There could be only one* Pat P -- "Never give up. It's fun, though, isn't it... how different you can interpret this final >scene? How could he *not* suspect Servalan is behind this trap? Because she used Blake for bait once before? He thinks she is too smart to use the same ruse twice? But Sleer thinks it through, rationalizing: Avon will think I'm too smart to use the same trick twice; therefore I will and he will fall for it. So: what clues are we given that Sleer has baited this trap? First: Why did Orac pick this exact moment to announce that he had found the end of a 'thread of probability' that he obviously had been pursuing for a long while. Sleer then sprung the trap by using Zukan to "flush the quail from cover" Meanwhile she, like a gentleman 'sportsman' of yore, hides in the bushes, armed, with a cadre of marksmen, waiting to pick off the flock. Easy as shooting skeet. Sleer will take the Alpha male bird of gaudiest plumage to mount and display in a glass case back at her estate on Earth. Perhaps the same way the rogue Troopers in "Moloch" displayed their once erstwhile captain. Imagine the gloat potential for Sleer were Avon 'alive' naked and helpless, in suspended animation in the tank... oh! suffering beautifully. P.S. Of course, I was introduced to the show in the middle, so I didn't know they had a character named Nova until I actually got the tapes. But not only were there names inverse reflections, so were their personalities, which makes me think it was *very* deliberate. And if Avon had died instead of Nova, the series would have been very short. Sometimes you needed nasty, suspicious Avon to keep them all from getting killed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 22:15:22 -0700 From: "Ellynne G." However, a while ago I was toying with a story idea (if anyone has noticed I come up with ideas that never go anywhere, this was another one) and was thinking of having a character use the name Susan Nova (never mind why Susan, Nova was just in the sense of 'new'). This character, who had more or less the same coloring as Avon also had the double misfortune of looking somewhere between 11 and 14 (rather younger than she was [just the usual minor female character has mind downloaded into new body story]). Then, after having some dealings with Scorpio's crew, she got caught by Servalan. That was when the story fell apart as I quickly realized I had written myself into a corner where there was no way Servalan wouldn't suspect this character was Avon's daughter simply because of her coloring and past association with him (Avon knew enough about this character's true background to treat her with a certain degree of respect [nothing overwhelming, just enough that it actually registered with Servalan as not Avon's normal way of dealing with adolescents]). Then I noticed the names. It was too much. Besides, it suddenly blew apart Servalan's alliance with another villain since she would be trying to protect Avon's supposed daughter from him while trying to use the girl as a pawn against Avon, who's relationship with the girl/woman had been awkward enough before this happened. I could honestly see him dying of mortal embarrassment over the mere suggestion. So, I doubt I'll have any characters named Nova anytime soon. Or maybe I'll just quickly toss them in the killer fizz and have done. Ellynne ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Art is created by choosing which ones to keep and which ones to toss. If only one in a hundred really go somewhere, that's good odds. The important thing is to have ideas. > and was thinking of having a character use the name Susan Nova > (never mind why Susan, Nova was just in the sense of 'new').
