Penny's original point, with which Una agreed, was that compromise for the sake of power and corruption are pretty much the same thing. I thought of Augustus as someone who made a good many compromises to secure his own power, and then went a fair way towards reducing the corruption that had become endemic during the days of the Roman Republic. The Second Triumverate of Augustus, Lepidus and Antony seized power in a bloodthirsty coup, and consolidated on their power with a series of purges. Then Augustus betrayed the Triumverate, defeated Antony and seized power for himself. Yet this heralded not only the Pax Romana, but also a better deal for Rome's ordinary people. The offices and institutions which wielded power in the days of the Republic were not dissolved, but brought into the jurisdiction of the Emperor. The Emperor then proceeded to dilute the power of the hereditary senators in favour of more able and intelligent candidates drawn from the ranks of the common people. The question is: was Augustus corrupt? There is a strong case to be made for saying that he improved the lives of his citizens: but he seized power with the sort of ruthlessness that made Servalan and Sula look like rank amateurs. :-) -- Rob ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 13:20:58 +0100 From: "David A McIntee" To: "Harriet Monkhouse" <101637.2064@compuserve.com>, "INTERNET:blakes7@lysator.liu.se" Subject: Re: [B7L] Re: Star Cops Message-Id: <199906111238.NAA10736@gnasher.sol.co.uk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > > >> And then can we talk him into writing the Lost Four Episodes? > > > >Que? > > According to Robert, who I hold to be omniscient, Star Cops should have > been a 13-episode season, like B7, but four episodes were never made > because of the BBC technicians' strike (which you will no doubt remember - > Dr Who was also affected). Actually there was only one episode missing due to that strike, and it was written by Philip Martin. The other three were never even written - that would have been an opening arc for season 2. -- "This path has been placed before you; the choice to take it is yours alone." http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Mansion/4845 http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Bistro/7312/ ------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 13:19:30 +0100 From: "David A McIntee" To: "Sue Cowley-WW" , "'B7'" Subject: Re: [B7L] B7L: Who novel crossover Message-Id: <199906111238.NAA10729@gnasher.sol.co.uk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ---------- > From: Sue Cowley-WW > just delurking for one brief moment because i just thought you might all > like to know that the rumours that a certain pychostrategist that we all > know and love does *not* appear in Chris B's next Who novel "CORPSE MARKER" > are TOTALLY UNTRUE. > > Carnell is alive and kicking and plays a *big* part in the book. Well, that change must be why it was delayed until November, cos when the rumours first started, both Steve Cole and Chris Boucher denied it. Still, if it's true, it's nice to see that fan-wishes can have their effect. -- "This path has been placed before you; the choice to take it is yours alone." http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Mansion/4845 http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Bistro/7312/ ------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 06:41:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Sue Clerc To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: [B7L] All new caption contest! For inspiration, read the captions from last month's frames from "Bergerac" and "Silver" with Gareth Thomas, and peruse the past caption contests back to March 1996. Go on, I dare you. The url is http://pages.cthome.net/blakes7/CCurrent.html and SNET seems to have fixed the slow connection problem. The bad links to the Character Profiles on the Data Banks page have also been fixed. I think Chris would only write the missing episodes if paid the going rate so to speak. (Which puts it rather beyond fanzine economics) The ones I'm publishing are ones he'd already written in novel form many years ago. I'd love to know how the series would have developed though. I always saw Mars as an end to a serason. Or was it a last script brought forward?
