Date: Mon, 27 Dec 93 11:16:18 PST From: Heather Madrone I use Ffiona Morgan's Daughters of the Moon deck, which I love. In DOM, Strength is connected to the kundalini and the Lioness is described as our beautiful beast (our sexuality). Daughters of the Moon P.O. Box 83 Forestville CA 95436 DOM comes in both black and white and in full color. I have the color deck. There's also a book. The deck is round, btw. Ffiona made several changes to the standard deck. She replaced Page, Knight, Queen, King with Maiden, Mother, Crone in the minor arcana. The meanings of some cards have changed, mostly in positive ways. The Blades arcana has more positive (and balanced) meanings and the blades represented are ordinary knives, sickles and athames as well as swords. The deck is multi-cultural and shows women of all ages, shapes, colors and forms. It is definitely a deck by and for women. Many of the images are empowering. Here's a brief description of the Major Arcana: The Dreamer - a woman sitting on a riverbank, her horse forgotten, cropping grass at her side. Retains much of the meaning of the Fool. The Witch - a woman holding a torch, stirring a cauldron in a grove with full ritual regalia. A card of empowerment. Isis - the Priestess - a winged woman holding a crystal globe, looking within in meditation. Mawu - a woman giving birth on the back of an elephant. Replaces the Emperor and Empress. Authority in conjunction with nurturance. Aphrodite - the Lovers - there are two renditions of this card; one showing a man and a woman, one two women. This is a beautiful card, very positive and sexual. The Amazon - a woman in a chariot, carrying a crescent shield. Replaces the Chariot. Linked to self-governance. Strength - a naked woman of sinuous grace, carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. She has her hand on the head of a lioness. They look poised, alert, powerful and full of grace and beauty. The Crone - The Wise One - The Gray Mare - an ancient woman (Caillech Bheur) riding on a gray mare over mountains and stone circles. She represents creative solitude, deep knowledge and the Dark Moon. Spiderwoman - Life Weaver - Replaces the Wheel of Fortune. An old woman spinning gossamer webs with a spinning wheel. Karma. Maat - a woman in a mandala under an Egyptian sun with Egyptian line drawings for eyes. She holds a balance and an ankh. Judgement. Reversal - a woman hanging from her knees over a pool of water. Replaces the Hanged Man and stands for voluntarily letting go of old ways of thought. The Phoenix - A beautiful winged woman rising from the flames. A card of transformation. Temperance - a very powerful card. A woman holds two goblets, one of water, the other of fire. She is pouring the goblets out and the streams of fire and water weave around to form a yin/yang type symbol. Oppression - burning crofts, hearkens bach to the Burning Times. Replaces the Devil. Represents stagnation or internal bondage. Pan - the positive New Age male, complete with pipes. Coyotewomon - a prowling female Coyote in the desert. The Trickster. All is not as it seems. There are hidden purposes or a hidden agenda here. Kali - The Awakener - awakening from illusion or oppression. Also a card of righteous anger expressed. The Star - beautiful, as always, a woman floats in the ether, pouring down blessings from her urn (positioned suggestively against her breast) onto the earth. Yemaya - the Moon - an African woman being drawn into (or worshipping?) the Full Moon. Intuitive power and knowledge. Slow and voluntary change. Amaterasu - the Sun - a beautiful Japanese-looking sun dominates the card. In the foreground, there are sunflowers, three naked women rejoice in a field. Celebration - a circle of women of various ages and body types dance in a ring under the moon. This is the card of ritual, renewal, change welcomed and celebrated. Shakti - Life Dancer - one of the most beautiful cards in the deck. A woman in a sari with one breast free, dances between day and night, ecstatically, freely. Wholeness. Balance. The artwork is beautiful. -- Heather Madrone madrone@cruzio.com (WAS madrone@cruzio.santa-cruz.ca.us)
