I just received my copy yesterday and listened to it this morning. But I know those of you who attended the autograph session on July 1st would have had almost two weeks to listen and post reviews. THE ACTOR SPEAKS CD is available from several sources, including Judith Proctor -- http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7 -- and Horizon -- http://www.horizon.org.uk/. The prices at each site seem similar. But the methods of payment, etc., vary, depending upon where you live. For Americans, Judith takes American cash 19 dollars and Horizon takes American checks which I figured out to be about 19.68 in Am. dollars, which included the one dollar extra check fee. However, you'll have to compute the figure yourself as it does vary. This review won't be very complete and detailed as I don't want to spoil it for you. However, I will say that it is very entertaining and it makes me want to listen to my SOLDIERS OF LOVE CDs 3-6 which I haven't listened to yet. (So far, July 2000, SOL has only gotten up to CD 6 of the 10 part series.) I think EVERY Gareth Thomas fan should buy this CD. If you're not a Thomas fan, I really don't know how much you'd like the CD. Maybe someone who is isn't a Gareth fan should get the CD and evaluate it? Basically, the CD is 75 minutes long. There are nice pictures of Gareth and Nicholas Courtney on the front and of the crew of the Vibrator on the back. (The Vibrator is the Liberator in the Blake's 7 parody called Jake's Heaven.) The CD is in 6 parts, two of which feature Gareth's writing. Nicholas Courtney does these two monologues which both involve monks in the middle-ages. If you've read Gareth's little short story Blythe Spirits, you'll be familiar with the type of story. These are sections 2 and 5 and take up 25 minutes total. Both stories come across as charming little fables and are enjoyable, but for me the rest of the CD is better. The first track is the most interesting one for me as it involves an interviewer talking to Gareth and to Mark. Mark produces SOLDIERS IN LOVE, the 10 part comedy sci-fi series that Gareth acts in, Gareth portraying three characters so far. This 15 minute track involves Gareth's views on Roj Blake which are slightly different from Mark's. Gareth does see Blake as both a freedom fighter and, also, someone who was becoming a fanatic by the end of second season. He talks about what he imagines might have been Blake's background. Gareth has some rather different ideas about Blake's family, and he, also, talks about his own father briefly. Track 3 (20 minutes) has Gareth and Mark talking about both Blake's 7 and Soldiers of Love. Gareth in SOL plays the villain Nermal, the gay camp Welshman Hywel who's an unsung hero, and the computer ANET in the sendup of Blake's 7 that appears in SOL which is a Galactovision TV series called Jake's Heaven. ANET is the Zen character in Jake's Heaven. This chat is really informative and Gareth throws in several tidbits about projects he done recently. Track 4 (10 minutes) is Gareth doing a monologue as Hywel Hammond. The gay Welsh lilt is charming. I enjoyed this segment so much that I seriously began to regret having loaned my SOL CDs to a friend. I was impressed with Mark Thompson's writing of this segment, too. Being an ex-English teacher, I really got a huge kick out of the segment where Hywel remembers his teacher--and not very fondly. He got a C- on his Roman orgy paper. The final segment, 6, is only five minutes long, and I really wanted it to be much much longer. It's "The Children of Nylon," an actual advert for Jake's Heaven that is really hilarious. For those of you not familiar with SOL (and that includes me), ANET (Gareth) is a computer who gives his information like a Gregorian chant. If you're a Gareth Thomas fan, there is no doubt that you should get this CD. I'd hope that any Blake's 7 fan would probably enjoy the CD simply because of the comments about Blake and the B7 parody. The past two days have seen about 25 suddenly changed schedules and vacation dates from over a dozen people, all of which I was somehow supposed to know about through precognition or telepathy (I _told_ you the Cally comparison would cause trouble), along with a complete redoing of my own schedule to accomodate them. I was repeatedly informed this was so no one would be inconvenienced. In short, I am at an all time low for tolerance for hidden agendas. I am at an even lower level of tolerance for people who suddenly decide, without explanation, to go zoom buggying off the chosen road for unknown destinations, demanding people with lives of their own 'trust him.' In other words, even Avon doesn't get any slack on this issue right now. Maybe in Autumn. That said (and realizing I may not be wholely rational at the moment), let me point out that Avon was not at his best in Terminal. First, despite events in Rumors of Death, he didn't expect anyone to follow him down to the planet (and what ship had he been on all season?). Second, he really believed it was possible to have Liberator in stationary orbit around a planet for half a day without a life threatening disaster that only he could solve (how tired was he?). Third (and most important), he actually seemed to think this was the first time he'd asked for a big leap of faith from the rest of them. Granted, the man thinks denial is a river in Egypt (or wherever the Federation decided nonclassified maps should say it is [I'm sure Avon could get the classified ones but I doubt his interest in the proper names of various bodies of water has ever reached a point of justifying the effort. So long as Zen can guarantee they aren't teleporting into one or otherwise have to include it in calculations, he wouldn't care]). He probably believes he's been the epitome of whatever the word for a no-trust-required-to-coexist-with-type- person is. But, the truth is, he had already used up a fair credit of trust and reliance prior to this. And he and his "I don't know where I'm going, what direction I'm headed in, or how long it will take" vacation plans are not going to win my sympathy. Neither will his withhold information for the good of others (roughly equivilant to "Why would I have left the folder on your desk? I didn't know you were going to need it. How was I supposed to know you sent a memo? What standard operating procedure? I was only gone for two weeks.") story.
