Far > be it from any of us to insult such a gracious gesture by refusing it at > this late date. What I was referring to, in typically elliptical fashion, was the way the political complexities of the American War of Independence tend to be reduced to patriotic simplicities. The French contribution tends to get overlooked. As does Britain's reliance on German mercenaries (they wanted an army of Cossacks, but Catherine the Great backtracked at the last minute). And the way France, Spain and Holland ganged up on Britain in a worldwide colonial war, making the AWI just one theatre in a global conflict. Not that it's a period I know a great deal about or have any pressing interest in, but I think it illustrates the way things tend to be a lot more complex than they are presented. I would expect Blake's rebellion to be similar in that regard, but the series typically failed to present us with anything like that level of complexity. It's far easier to chant "Two world wars and one world cup" than to face the fact that Britain has fought three world wars and failed to win any of them. I wouldn't have thought it would have much appeal to a non-Gareth fan - except NIck Courtney fans. Mind you, to any fan of Soldiers of love, it has to be worth it for Hywel's bit - I found that to be worth the price of the CD on its own. > The first track is the most interesting one for me as it involves an > interviewer talking to Gareth and to Mark. This is the bit I really enjoyed. Not mad commedy, just gentle humour. Not nearly as adult as most of the SOL universe either. This particular monologue may work for those who wouldn't normally want to listen to Soldiers of Love because of the level of adult humour. (I won't say there's none, but it isn't a main focus) Hywel, for those who don't know him, is a gentle soul - the kind of man who wouldn't harm a fly, but is very protective of those he loves. In an odd sort of way, he is one of life's innocents. He's gay, but because that is an integral part of himself it is not something that he would concieve of feeling guitly about. I think he's about 58, but there is a child's delight in him - he takes a joy in life. I'm probably over-analysing the character, but I liked him instantly the first time I heard him and it's taken me time to work out why. There's no malice in Hywel - a little like Gareth himself. > > The final segment, 6, is only five minutes long, and I really wanted it to be > much much longer. For those of you not familiar with SOL (and > that includes me), ANET (Gareth) is a computer who gives his information like > a Gregorian chant. The more B7 you know, the funnier this is. Bad jokes abound. The final pun was so excruciatingly bad that I almost ripped it off for a convention fancy dress show. Wonderfully groan-inducing. > If you're a Gareth Thomas fan, there is no doubt that you should get this CD. > I'd hope that any Blake's 7 fan would probably enjoy the CD simply because of > the comments about Blake and the B7 parody. I haven't seen it myself, but when I was visiting my sister yesterday she told me that she'd seen "that guy that for some unfathomable reason you're so mad about" on television. It took me about fifteen minutes to get the facts from her [she isn't very articulate except when commenting on my taste in men :-)] but it seems to have been in the second part of the "Mysteries of the Universe" series, which was about black holes. The B7 clip they used showed the crew being at the point of getting sucked into a black hole, so it must have been from Dawn of the Gods. For confirmation I asked my sister if she'd noticed any skin-tight red leather trousers but that caused just a blank stare. :-) Apparently it was a very short clip. Still, since I gather that the Discovery programs are broadcast internationally, (and get repeated often) I thought I'd mention it.
