For a while, waaay back when, I was the regular book reviewer for a Doctor Who zine, and had a policy of being polite but honest; if I thought it wasn't any good, I'd say so. Problem was, this was the early days of the New Adventures, and I would occasionaly get attitude along the lines of "we have to be nice about the books cos if they don't sell, they'll discontinue the line." Which was fair enough, but it did also mean that my reviews wouldn't have been trustworthy guides to what the books were like, so I ignored it. These days, if I'm asked to review something, I generally say "I'll review it, but I'll be honest. If you don't want to upload/print the review, cos it's too negative, that's your prerogative, but I won't lie." A friend of mine, actually, picks the movies he sees by whether or not a certain New Yorker critic liked them. He knows the man's tastes well enough, he says, to know that if this critic hated the movie, he'd love it... That means that whoever they're replying to gets the message twice. And if a message gets replied to several times, the "to" field can contain up to four or five adresses (got one of those this morning) besides the lysator address. Mind you, I'm not pointing an accusing finger. I, too, was once a newbie . So, for those of you who've recently joined: whenever you reply to a message, please take a few seconds to edit the "to" field so that the name of the person you were replying to is deleted. It's not absolutely necessary. Forgetting to do so is not even a flogging offense. But it *is* polite. Thank you. But he's a complete bastard who's > on the right side. > > Fiona My impulse was to say, life makes complete bastards of some people. But obviously, being kicked on by the world doesn't create the same results by different people. Take Blake; Federation treats him cruelly; he reacts by wanting to free everyone from the same possible fate. Avon probably hasn't has a rough life by the same standards (although I don't think there is an objective standard for hardship-- I endure physical pain better than most people, for instance, but emotional pain is much worse), and yet he treats the human race with suspicion. Likewise in the Harry Potter books, both Malfoy and Potter are in bad homes. Yet Potter, neglected to the point of abuse, is *mostly* a kind and considerate person. Malfoy, emotionally abused but physically pampered (a bad combonation for the soul in any case) is... well, somehow I'm thinking "boy Servalan"... surrounding himself with somewhat dim syncophants, manipulating people, pulling rank, etc. In a power struggle with Harry (which he constantly loses, to intensify his bitterness, while Harry remains oblivious to his feelings). Frankly, I've wondered... getting back to Snape being based on 'a teacher she disliked', and turning out to have a heroic streak... I was thinking that the series is, by nature, going to be a prolonged coming-of-age story. One thing we learn as we move between 11 and 21, is that the world is not the black and white, good-guys v. bad-guys plafce we are taught about as children and want to believe. Which makes an Avon-ish character most appropriate. To a child's eyes, he's irredeemably nasty. As you get older, you recognize he's got problems of his own, and is a very unhappy person. You see a potential for good. If you're like me, you want to bring out that potential. I doubt Harry will overcome his antipathy for the man, but I can't b e sure. That's what growing up does... changes perspective. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 20:32:21 -0600 From: Penny Dreadful To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: [B7L] Croucher Underwear Message-Id: <4.1.20000721202412.00aa92a0@mail.powersurfr.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" At 10:42 AM 7/21/00 +0200, Jacqueline Thijsen wrote: >I have a dream.
