(evil smile) I really like that, The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of the few *classics* that I can stomach, I remember I fell in love with it (mostly Percy) the first time I read it. I've been trying to do the same thing with the characters from Les Miserables for about a month, it's hard because it's such a spanning story. But I came up with... Jean Valjean - Blake Marius - Avon Eponine - Cally Gavroche - Vila Initially I wanted to make Tarrant as Marius but I couldn't make it fit with the other characters. Good grief how do I start prattling like this, still I did just get out of the X-men movie so be thankful I didn't start down that road... These lines are sung by Chauvelin. Ah! I'm a big fan of that musical, but figured most people would never have heard of it, so I never brought it up on the list. You've got the concept album, obviously. I recommend you get the Broadway version, too. There "Falcon In The Dive" a new song for Chauvelin, which also makes me think rather of Avon, perhaps around 4th season? "There was a dream, a dying ember, There was a dream I don't remember, But I will resurrect that dream, Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper." Or, the next lines-- "Wade in blood up to your armpits" speech? "Down here in hell, where life is cheaper, Now here in hell the blood runs deeper..." And Kathryn, the idea of Avon as a fop is stunning. Of course his dry delivery would make such lines as, "La, Sink me!" sound even odder than they usually do. Must think about this. Meanwhile, I'm delighted to know you appreciate good music. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 19:35:54 -0600 From: "Ellynne G." "You all righ'?" [Hagrid] said gruffly. "Yeah," said Harry. "No, yeh're not," said Hagrid, "'Course yeh're not. But yeh will be." Now, I'll be the first to say the idea of Hagrid as Avon is only slightly less weird than Mr. Ed playing Darth Vader. But, if we're looking for evidence of B7 influence, therebye strengthening claims of Snape being Avon-ish, every little bit helps (never mind what Rowling said. Negative evidence has no place in these arguements). > > Which makes an Avon-ish character most appropriate. To a child's > eyes, > he's irredeemably nasty. Haven't gotten that far in my feelings towards Snape (the man needs a good, for-oily-hair shampoo, for one thing), but you never know. Oh, no. I'm actually beginning to imagince Snape in the B7 universe. Since he could turn Servalan into a newt, the plot difficulties would probably get resolved way too fast (and no way am I putting the B7 crowd in Harry's universe, they'd get caught in the crossfire between Dumbledore and Voldemort before they could believe what was going on. _Bad_ idea... really bad... terribly bad... hmmm). I've always considered "Falcon" to be Travis music vid material. "The Riddle" (though it's already been made into numerous music vids in numerous fandoms) is perfect for a B7 ensemble vid. I very slightly prefer the version on the Broadway cast CD. But with the exceptions of those two songs, I like the concept CD better. And for years and years, long before Pimpernel was revised and reached Broadway, friends and I have said that we'll be sorely disappointed if Steven Pacey isn't cast as Sir Percy if/when the musical is produced in London. In fact, what I like best about the series is that it does get more complex as the books progress. In book one, you get the situation from the eyes of an eleven-year-old (good guys, bad guys, amusing verses, not-too-mortal peril), but gradually as things go on the peril gets more mortal, the characters more ambiguous, and the situations less easily solved. I was thinking about Dumbledore the other day; how at the beginning of the series he's amusing and silly, and indeed he gets no less so, but as the books progress Rowling lets us see more and more of the sharp edges under the silliness. > Which makes an Avon-ish character most appropriate. To a child's eyes, > he's irredeemably nasty. As you get older, you recognize he's got > problems of his own, and is a very unhappy person. True. Or, in my case, you recognise that such people, while not necessarily admirable, are understandable. Personally I've never lost my antipathy for Avon, but I have a certain respect for him.
