Your earlier definition of purple prose ("lots of adjectives, high-falutin' phraseology, and lots of other over-the-top stuff that experienced writers aren't supposed to touch with a bargepole of any size") is correct. As you can see it doesn't exclude slash. So if there is a page of purple prose it could include stuff from all aspects of the genre, including slash. Given the high amount of slash stories that exist in B7 fandom, I would have thought it more surprising not to find slash stories on a page like that. Yep, that's what it is. The "purple prose" contest has been running over on Space-City, and was basically a challenge to write the worst story openings the writers could think of. Being from the Space-City denizens, they were mostly "adult" in nature. That's why the Purple Prose page says up at the top: Purple Prose Ridiculous situations. Sentences to titillate and amuse. The worst adult story openings you can think of, by writers who will never admit it. Warning: some of these are extremely explicit, which means SEX. In other words, read at your own risk. - Lisa _____________________________________________________________ Lisa Williams: lcw@dallas.net or lwilliams@ti.com Lisa's Video Frame Capture Library: http://lcw.simplenet.com/ New Riders of the Golden Age: http://www.warhorse.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 15:52:35 +0100 (BST) From: Judith Proctor To: Lysator List cc: Space City Subject: [B7L] Altazine Message-ID: Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Altazine is folding due to lack of sufficient submissions. I think most of us tend to write via e-mail these days. I'm handling overseas refunds for Neil and I've contacted most people individually. However, I don't have an e-mail address for Sue Dalton or Jacquelyn Taylor. If either of you read this, could you please get in touch so that we can determine whether you'd rather have a refund in dollars cash or a donation to Oxfam (or I can buy Gareth a pint on your behalf at Neutral Zone this coming weekend). Slash???? What is this??? A brief fanfic jargon overview: Slash: Fan fiction which contains adult material involving same-sex relationships. Slash ranges from understated to very explicit indeed. The name is derived from the symbol "/", used to separate the names of the characters involved when describing such a story (e.g. Avon/Blake). Het: Fan fiction which contains adult material involving opposite-sex relationships. Derived from "heterosexual". Adult: Usually this means fanfic containing slash and/or het material. Gen: Usually means fanfic which does *not* contain adult material; i.e., for "general" audiences. Exact usage sometimes varies a bit. For a more detailed glossary, you might want to look at .
