I'm sure I read something in the digests at the FTP site about clones, particularly Avon ones. 2) Gail, so far as I can see, Blake needed a reason to attack an individual or group. The goose that made me nervous around other geese did not (vicious, extra-territorial beast that it was). Therefore, I don't see any significance in hating geese, but if you do, let me know. 3) Alison, has anyone of the Tarrant Nostra persuasion made note of how interesting that John Clare quote would be to them? Either that or there's been a glitch in receiving the digest and it doesn't actually say what is printed out in front of me. Regards Joanne It is little details like this - and the string from which the fearful vampire dangles - that really *make* a horror film, and qualifies it for the high honour of a Duff Oscar. --Sue Papworth ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 01:19:04 +0100 From: Anne Lane To: "'B7'" Subject: RE: [B7L] Weasel words Message-ID: <01BDE04A.2A5299A0.aplane@tesco.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This is very good - all very apt. Could the skunk be the guy (sorry, mind like a sieve) in Shadow? Can't think of anyone playful enough for an otter. From p. 65: "'It's very simple,' said Kerr Avon, who spoke with such knowing authority that Blake looked up, rather surprised, He saw a man with large pale eyes and a high domed forehead, who at a guess was somewhere in his thirties." Avon as homely, geeky nerd, LOL! This must have been written before the casting was done, or indeed, as you point out, before the sets were designed. The dialogue was spiffed up, too, by the time it was actually filmed. Really, I think it had much to do with the eccentric charm of the show that in the end they went against perceptions of type and cast a handsome and rather flamboyant actor as the computer geek. But then, as you know, I'm a shameless Avon fan. :) Sarah T. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 22:55:51 -0500 From: Lisa Williams To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: [B7L] Re: Novel by Trevor Hoyle Message-Id: <199809150349.WAA00070@mail.dallas.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" s.thompson8@genie.com wrote: >Avon as homely, geeky nerd, LOL! I thought I'd share my initial reaction to the post. What you all may not realize is that when your favorite character is fandom's chief whipping boy you expect the worst. As I scanned down the list of Mustelidae entries I was cringing in anticipation of what horrible fate awaited Tarrant. So my first reaction was one of relief: "at least he wasn't assigned the skunk." My next reaction was realization that given the origin of the post--England--both meanings of "shag" were probably intended to apply to Tarrant. ("Shag" for *that* meaning isn't common over here.) Which I thought was cute. :) At which point I was left content and didn't feel the need to comment, though I did save the post in case something clever or appropriate occurred to me down the road. I've been enjoying the animal discussions, but I've not come up with anything to contribute to them. I was waiting in HMV to pay for a couple of tapes (non-B7) and the guy in front of me was asking if all the B7 tapes had been released at once. The salesperson was looking in her computer and umming and ahhing. I butted in saying no they were being released a couple every month. Me and this guy then got into a nice conversation about B7. What amazes me though is that he wanted to buy the whole series at once! He was also wondering if they were on DVD, to which I said *Right!*. I certainly wouldn't deny its existence. It never bothers me because Avon developed an equally ruthless streak. (Stardrive and Orbit instantly come to mind). If people don't mind it in Avon, why should I assume they mind it in Blake? They were both complex characters and you can only understand them properly if you see their character from all sides. If you don't accept the rough along with the smooth, then you're only fooling yourself. > > If someone spends years fighting against near impossible odds, and he > becomes hard-edged, cynical and autocratic, finally dying for what he > believes in, I don't see how that reflects badly on him. Surely it is a tribute to the > man that he was prepared to pay such a price. It's a very interesting area. One of the things that I find interesting about Blake is the prices he was forced to pay. Film/TV heroes are so often allowed to win their fights without ever having to face compromise in their personal ethics. Blake is unusual in that he was forced into a situation where the perfect knight in shining armour simply wasn't going to win. Avon was gradually forced along a similar path, although the effect on their personalities was not identical (as one might expect given their different natures to begin with) Judith -- http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7 Redemption 99 - The Blakes 7/Babylon 5 convention 26-28 February 1999, Ashford International Hotel, Kent http://www.smof.com/redemption/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 18:57:43 +0100 (BST) From: Judith Proctor To: Lysator List cc: Space City Subject: [B7L] zines to Australia Message-ID: Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII Pat Fenech has checked out Australian postage rates for me.
