I feel real bad about not liking Voyager, because I really adore most other Trek, but Voyager has such consistantly bad stories (I watched the 100th episode with awe, this would be perfect for MST3K), charecters that are near imposible to care about (please let the whole crew die, I was really rooting for them getting stuck in the ice for eternity). Nah, it's amazing that the same people that turn out the quality early and late DS9 stuff can turn up such utter crap. The basic premise of the show is that this janitor is on this ship as it gets launched into space, and the evil people who own the ship decide to play really horrible movies to see how long the janitor can last. To keep himself complany, the janitor builds a few robots out of spare parts (like a gumball machine or a vacuum cleaner) and 2 of them go into the movie theatre with them where they sit there and heckle the movies. > 'There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish' > -The fourth Doctor and on a completely different note, i absolutely love that quote. :) tegan (*) tegan@goddess.coe.missouri.edu http://goddess.coe.missouri.edu/~tegan "Captain, we're sorry. It shows here in the US on the scifi channel. There is also a movie that should be available for rent at most larger video store. In eupoe, as I understand, it airs on the European Sci-Fi channel. Message-ID: <19981122215401.19761.qmail@hotmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain How much time passes between the beginning and the end of the series? I was reading the 1997 archives of this list (when I get obsessed, baby, I do it _right_) and read something which suggested "at least" 13 years, and without giving it any thought this struck me as being about right. But reading further this is by _far_ the highest estimate I've seen. The consensus seems to be somewhere under seven years, and that's _including_ the mumble*cough*mumble months taken to get to Cygnus Alpha. There was a discussion earlier in '98 that looked promising but it deteriorated into a debate about velocity. And I'm not talking about velocity here, I try not to think about v > c, it hurts my brain. Although it occurs to me that's the very reason why I was quite happy up till now not to even ask the question - once one violates the sanctity of "c", one can't really expect loyalty from "t"... Hmm, so maybe my mistake is _assuming_ "t" is inviolate. But suppose we dispense with the (pseudo)science for the nonce. I still find it hard to believe that _all_ that took place in six or seven years. Gan is the "strongman." Generally, this character is needed in pre-tech fantasy adventure (to heave aside rocks, trees, etc.) but is not needed in space adventure, because blasters, teleports, etc. do those jobs. Shadows Using these archetypes, I agree with your listings for B7. SInce there is no Tarrant nor Soolin, are we to assume they are beyond categorization? *g* for the B5 comparisons, I think that I would throw Franklin into the Technic area, as he's always playing with those alien techno-thingies in MedLab. That would put Garibaldi in the Everyman position, which suits him perfectly: he's the one you identify with because he's screwed up soooooo many times. :) Plus there's the wonderful shift for Londo from Everyman to Evil Leader, and G'Kar from Warrior to Mystic.... Alas, I have not read Lord of the Rings yet.
