Maybe delta children were never properly >tested, but Vila was just resenting being put down by everyone and just wanted >to claim that he could have been upgraded. Now, it's been bugging me for a while how the class structure, intelligence and caste interacted to produce grades - and this is by far a more intelligent solution than I ever came up with. . I always assumed Vila was fibbing, yet I also feel he's highly intelligent. So Judith is probably right - it is entirely reasonable that tests would be far from capable of taking in cultural differences between castes, and would be biased in favour of the higher castes. Remember what Fran said about IQ testing of American children? Testing is *never* a neutral process. So, it's easy to believe that a smart but low-caste kid would get a Delta classification. And if he was aware of this it is equally logical - 'specially if he's our Vila - that he would lie about it. Thus the Alphas rarely dropped down, and fewer an fewer Deltas moved up. And for the few that did, no doubt such exciting careers as company-grade line officers awaited(ie cannon-fodder). Our resident thief, knowing this, probably was truthful in saying he did buy his rating(maybe even switching his rating with an Alpha whose scores were particullary abysimal). D. He was classified as a Delta, and found it quite handy-- but occaisionally embarrassing. Thus, "I bought my Delta Grade" But if you had to buy it, instead of cheating for free, I don't think you'd make Alpha. ::smirk:: Avona ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 21:04:39 PST From: "Don Trower" To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: [B7l] re: absolutely nothing Message-ID: <19980312050439.13078.qmail@hotmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain I can understand the general confusion with these so called blank emails.... The best way to rob an office block is to be a contract cleaner, low status, few people acknowledge your existence but you have the door keys/passes to the whole place, no one would question you walking into high security Vem store carrying empty bin bags etc. The skill is walking out with them not full of rubbish :) The real background of Villa could go either way. A real delta that saw this path as the only way up out of the gutter. Or.... 1] An alpha/beta etc. with a greed that could be met by the means of a thief. 2] An anything grade doing it 'cos he can. (More Avon in style) My feeling is a real delta that knew to keep his head down, not too bright or too stupid, the grey man. Unfortunately, the nationality of the scientists, and the way the proof was gathered was the reason that it was ignored. I have every sympathy for the former regardless of age, because > I've seen how difficult it can be to resist the pressure to start, even > in my age group, who certainly ought to know better. Going back to my youth, I was the only girl in my year who did not smoke. Not because I had any anti smoking tendencies (both my parents were 30/40 day each), but because I tried it, and spent the rest of day being violently sick. Nobody tried peer pressure after that. Coming forward 25 years, my own children have grown up with 2 non smoking parents, their aunts and uncles do not smoke. Is that not good role modeling? You would think so, but no - my eldest daughter aged 15 and 11 months has started smoking. That is despite a very long family history of cancer (all four of my grandparents, and my mother 12 years ago, my mother in law 18 months ago, her sister 6 months earlier.) Heart attacks are also common in my family, (my father 6 weeks ago, and his 3 brothers in the last 10 years), most of which have been definately linked to heavy smoking in the past. If that is not enough to deter someone from smoking, I don`t know what is. > But I've also met a > good few smokers who will refuse point blank to consider the people who > have to share air space with them. They, together with the ones who are > more considerate but have no desire to stop, greatly outnumber the ones > in your situation. I have also known very considerate smokers (ie they ask if they can light up in front of you, and make sure they do not blow the smoke your direction), and some very inconsiderate smokers who don`t care who they breath over. Why is it that I can put up with and tolerate the considerate smokers, but not the inconsiderate ones?
