I suppose it's as valid as any other, >but as >far as I'm concerned it's utter junk. > My opinion on this is mixed. Cally came from a culture that took ideas about honesty and decency much more seriously than most of the Liberator crew. She also seems to be the product of a fairly free society with high standards of ethical behavior. But was she from a culture that put a high value on personal honor and keeping face? Some statements strongly suggest it. "Bounty" in particular seems to push the idea of Cally coming from an honor oriented, Asian style culture (the Auron ambassador even has a Chinese name). But, other than her acceptance of exile and a limitless supply of Auron wise sayings (comparable to the western image of Confucianisms), Cally's overall behavior doesn't support it. We never see her react as if she's lost face in a conflict, nor does she ever seem to think others have (except possibly Leehan). The same can be said for other Aurons in "Children." Clearly, she has what seems to be a culturally rooted sense of honor and ethics. She may have a sense of loss of face but, if so, it worked in a complex cultural framework where it only applied in some situations and with some people for her to be able to disregard it as easily as she does with the crew and others. >I think the discrepancies between the various accounts of Cally's >reasons >for leaving Auron show, more than all, the pitfalls of not having >everything >worked out beforehand. This would explain it. I admit, any attempt to reconcile the contradictions is going to take a lot of mental duct tape to hold the pieces together. But half the fun is trying. So the 'we' in Cally's 'So did we' does not refer to the >Auron government, but to the dissident underground, and resisting the >Federation is not the only item on the agenda. Likewise, when Cally says >that Lehan can go home, government approval of his return is not uppermost >in her mind Another subtle difference between Cally's mission and Lehan's is that Lehan was going to form an alliance whereas Cally was going to take direct action against the Federation. Therefore while Cally was compromising Auron neutrality, Lehan might simply have been on a diplomatic mission. Hence, Lehan's mission not only gets government approval it might even be on behalf of the government while Cally 's definitely is not. Cally can't go home because they won't let her. From the snippet of dialogue you quoted it may be that Lehan could return home but chooses not to because he feels he still has work to do. Actually, I figured you'd appear in account 4. Honest. It's on the +AD4-Space City list. Very kind of you to put it up on a list I don't subscribe to. Not. Leaving aside the Kiwi Separatism for the moment, the four main accounts remind me of the 'four-fold way' of role-playing games. Briefly put, this theorises that gamers follow four different approaches to gaming - 1) The Power Gamer - seeking to maximise wealth and lethality for his (or sometimes her) character. 2) The Wargamer - prefers the combat, but primarily as a tactical exercise. 3) The Narrative Gamer - the story's the thing. 4) The Role-Player - into deep characterisation and vicarious living above all else. (1)s and (2)s tend to get along well with each other, as do (3)s and (4)s, but other combinations can generate inter-player tensions. As I see it, Power Gamers and Wargamers are more focused on their own characters, whereas Narrativists and Role-Players are more outward-looking - characters (whether it's what they do or who they are) can only make sense when viewed as part of a coherent fantasy world. In tthe Q-study, we have a parallel, I think. Acc1s and 2s focus primarily on the main characters, and not necessarily all of them, while Acc3s and 4s accord the background equal importance. What you might call the difference between seeing the figures in the landscape and seeing them as part of the landscape. In practice, of course, individuals follow several paths at once. Many Powergamers enjoy a bit of Wargaming too, for example. Likewise I would expect Acc1s and 2s to share a coincidence of interests, and also Acc3s and 4s. Some people, of course, can juggle all four paths and pick and choose to suit as the occasion demands. (These would be the ones who come out as non-exemplifying sorts, yes?) As a rolegamer I'm primarily a Narrativist with a bit of Roleplayer thrown in. Powergaming has never interested me much, and I enjoy combat for the adrenaline rush and the tactical stuff can go fry itself. So I guess it's no surprise that I come out as an Acc3/4. I would further expect extreme 1s/2s and 3s/4s to have some trouble communicating with each other, because they see the series in radically different ways (while a 1 and a 2, or a 3 and 4, would have a much easier time talking to each other). As far as B7 goes, this kind of classification sounds a lot more useful than all that Myers-Briggs tosh:) Neil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 16:18:05 +0100 From: "Neil Faulkner" To: "lysator" Subject: Re: [B7L] Forget the telemovie...
