The DN550 supports both AEGIS, Apollo's virtual memory operating system, and AUX, Apollo's implementation of UNIX (TM) System III software with Berkeley extensions. These operating environments both offer this transparent access to all DOMAIN resources, and can be run simultaneously. .sp 3 {!Multi-Window Display Manager!} .sp 2 The DOMAIN System's easy-to-use, multi-window Display Manager lets the user divide the screen into multiple work areas to provide a natural user interface that can help increase productivity. dvanced graphics tools such as the DOMAIN Graphics Resources (DGR) are integrated into the Display Manager so that software developers can build applications using these features, thereby aiding in the creation of user-friendly applications. .sp 3 .ne 7 {!Fully Compatible with the DOMAIN Product Family!} .sp 2 All members of the DOMAIN Product Family let users transparently share information and resources in the distributed DOMAIN system environment. .sp As a member of the DOMAIN Product Family, the DN550 runs a wide range of system software, including a growing library of program development and professional productivity tools, supports a wide range of peripheral resources, and provides access to other computing environments through communication facilities. .sp Over three hundred of the premier third party packages are currently available in such areas as CAD/CAM, modeling, IC layout, and statistical analysis. .sp 3 The DOMAIN software environment also features the FORTRAN 77, ISO Pascal, C, and LISP programming languages. .sp The DN550 is, therefore, capable of providing increased productivity to the widest range of technical professionals. .sp 3 {!Complete Set of Graphics Tools!} .sp 2 Apollo offers the developer the most comprehensive set of graphics tools in the industry today. .sp The DOMAIN Graphics Resources (DGR) is a set of graphics tools that ranges from comprehensive graphics primitives through high level 2- and 3-D capabilities. .sp The Graphics Metafiles Resource (GMR) is the most advanced member of DGR. GMR takes advantage of the high degree of integration offered by the DN550 workstation and provides a graphics architecture designed to handle both graphics databases and high speed viewing and modeling. Therefore, the developer can create user-friendly applications without developing complicated graphics system software. .sp The DN550 supports 2-D clipping and transforms in microcode providing the throughput required for highly interactive graphics applications. .sp DOMAIN CORE is a complete set of SIGGRAPH CORE functions for 2-D and 3-D graphics applications. DOMAIN CORE provides the portability and ease-of-use of the proposed CORE standard. .sp The DOMAIN 4014 emulator lets any DOMAIN workstation emulate the Tektronix 4014 graphics terminal and lets users access the wide range of 4014 applications running on remote mainframes and superminis. .sp GKSGRAL, a third-party implementation of the Graphical Kernal System (GKS) approved by the ISO, provides a standard interface for programmers to incorporate graphics into their applications. .sp 3 {_Modular Design_} .sp 2 The DN550 features modular design and construction. Three independent modules -- processor, mass storage, and MULTIBUS (TM) modules -- fit neatly into one quiet and compact system unit. All three modules have separate fans and power supplies. This modular design lends itself to high reliability and ease of servicing. And for original equipment manufacturers and system builders, the DN550 is available either fully packaged or as a rack-mountable unit. .sp 2 {_Processor Module_} .sp The DN550's processor module contains the 68010 processor, 1M to 3M bytes memory, a graphics subsystem, two RS-232C ports, and network interface; a floating point accelerator is also available. .sp 2 {_Graphics Subsystem_} .sp The DN550's graphics subsystem has a bit-slice processor with up to 2M bytes of dedicated display memory. The frame buffer can store and display up to 256 colors simultaneously from a palette of over 16 million. This graphics subsystem is capable of performing a wide variety of almost instantaneous graphics operations. .sp The graphics subsystem can build or modify images by performing bit-block transfers (bit-blt), vector generation, and area fill operations. Vector generation is at a rate in excess of 1M pixels/sec. Trapezoid and tile fills, each with their own distinct advantages, are performed at up to 320M bits/sec. The bit block (bit-blt) operation tranfers a rectangular region at a rate of 160M bits/sec. .sp In addition to the normal bit-blt, a full complement of raster operations are also provided. These raster-ops allow each plane of the source area of display memory to be combined with each plane of the destination area in any one of the sixteen Boolean operations. With transfer rates of up to 100M bits/sec., programmers can achieve animated effects by using raster-ops while combining a series of image frames. .sp 2 .ne 7 {_Mass Storage Module_} .sp The DN550's 5 1/4 in. 50M byte Winchester disk and 1/4 in. 45M byte streaming cartridge tape drive provide local mass storage and convenient, high-speed backup. A single controller supports both the tape and disk units and uses industry standard interfaces to allow for the easy integration of larger capacity disks as they become available. .sp 2 {_MULTIBUS Module_} .sp The DN550's MULTIBUS module contains a 4-slot MULTIBUS peripheral adapter, power supply, and fans. With the multitude of peripherals available for the MULTIBUS adapter, users can add devices as appropriate for their applications. Apollo's GP/IO software lets application programmers write drivers in high level languages for MULTIBUS devices. .sp 3 {_Ergonomic Packaging_} .sp 2 All modules fit neatly into the DN550's sleek, sculptured electronics enclosure that comfortably slides under the user's worktable. The unit is exceptionally quiet. The sculptured monitor has a small footprint to maximize workspace utilization, while the low-profile keyboard with optional mouse or touchpad lets the user easily interact with the system.
